Did anyone think the Pretest books were useful with respect to studying for USMLE Step 1? I've heard that they are really helpful for the shelf exams. However, our school unfortunately doesn't use the NBME shelf exams, at least not for the basic sciences. I've noticed also in looking at the newest edition and the edition prior, that the questions are exactly the same with no changes, not even in organization, just a different cover. What I have also noticed with the books is a lot of testing on minute details in the specific basic science subject, and not really any conceptual thinking or clinical vignettes, although there is a Pretest book called Clinical Vignettes for the USMLE Step 1.

I used some of them for shelf exams and was thinking about it for the step 1...i found that there are just so many good/better sources out there that for the amount of time set apart to study for this test, I could be more productive using a different source. do what you think will work for you, but i would recommend UW as your question source. i know people say its only 2000 questions, but i learned A LOT with this tool.
