Hey guys:
Sorry, I've been lurking lately. I thought I had bookmarked this one thread I am looking for from a while back..like 6 months ago maybe. I have tried the search function, but I am not typing in the right key words, I think.
I think ItsGavinC wrote part of the specific thread I loved. It was "why you want to be a dentist" or something like that. One of the things that stuck out in my head was I liked how ItsGavinC (I think, don't shoot me if I'm wrong) summed up why he wanted to be a dentist. One of the reasons was to gain the ability to immediately help people, by creating a direct solution for their problem.
Anyway, I loved how eloquently it was stated. If someone knows where that thread is, can you post it? I thought it was really a must-read for those of us wanting some positive reasons for choosing dentistry. I've been in flux for almost a year now 🙁 on the 'is it going to be med school or dental school' thing. I really have the passion for dentistry, as it has had a direct impact on my life (witness my 20 crowns, 4 veneers, 4 crownlengthening gum surgeries, and 9 root canals, heh), but I feel the pull that I think many of us feel by society to be an MD (blah, blah, I know). I finally made up my mind to go with my heart and chose dentistry...I'm the only one I know who loves teeth that much. Seriously, when I'm checking people out, the first thing I look at is their smile. 🙂
OK..so I got off on a tangent. In sum, I love dentistry, and I loved how one poster put it into words on this board, so I'm looking for that thread. If someone knows where it is, please POST THE LINK. 🙂
By the way, just a positive story of note: I had some major tooth pain this Friday night for the first time in about 2 years. And since I got out of the Army about a year ago, I don't have a regular dentist. I called around (remember this is 7PM on a Friday evening) and found a dentist who would not help me over the phone (I understood..maybe he thought I was a junkie), but did say he would go down to his office, and to meet him there at 8PM (!!!!!!). I did so, and he took the x ray, checked me out, numbed me up, gave me the Rx's fr Cleocin and Vicodin-ES, and was the sweetest man I have met in a long time. And he was very excited to talk to me all about dentistry. After I was numbed up (and out of pain) we chatted for a while. He told me I should come and shadow him sometime, and wanted to continue to advise me regarding dentistry.
It just thoroughly amazed me that a guy who's probably making 150,000/year minimum (guessing, by looking at his office) would come down on a Friday night and help me out without knowing me, and for a piddlin' 50 bucks that he charged me. I said to myself: "see, Brent..there really ARE good doctors left in the world."
When I am a dentist, I will never forget the kindness he showed me. 😀
