I am having somewhat of a moral dilemma right now. I am applying to med school right now. I attended a school a few years ago and basically stopped going to class and failed 4 courses. It's a long story but basically I transferred to a different school a couple years later and didn't transfer those courses. My official transcript at my current school makes no mention of these failed courses and I am competitive with my current coursework for medical school. I know I am supposed to send a transcript of every school I have attended to AMCAS and AACOMAS. If I send these failed course transcripts, I won't get into med school at all. I can retake the courses and go to DO school, but I'd rather go to allopathic schools. If I don't submit these transcripts, will I ever get caught? I know that AMCAS and AACOMAS don't do a search for transcripts. I really messed up when I was 20 and I don't know what to do. Does anyone know somebody who has been in this same situation or a similar situation? My fear is that I will get into med school and they will find out during my years there and dismiss me. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Not really. When will I get caught? I'm not trying to defraud anyone and I haven't even applied yet. I am just trying to figure out what to do. I screwed up in the past and I am pretty sure I wouldn't get into med school if I sent in those transcripts. Thanks

Well if you know that you took classes and the AMCAS asks for ALL classes you took including college courses you took even in HS and you INTENTIONALLY leave classes out then yea you are trying to defraud someone. There are ppl with bad grades on their transcript. If you showed an upward trend med schools would take that into consideration.

here's the problem: you have to submit transcripts from any ugrads you attended to AMCAS. even if your current school doesn't show failed courses, your previous ugrad transcript might

IF you took ALL of your courses for degree at your 2nd ugrad, and didn't require any transfer courses to get your degree, including pre-med prerequisites, then you could potentially ignore the first school altogether. this is, however, immoral, and if you so much as submitted a SS# to this initial school you really don't know where in your records it could show up. sound's like a gamble, i wouldn't risk it either way.

AMCAS checks with a company (many on here believe it to be the National Student Clearinghouse) that has information on all schools you've attended. If you do not submit a transcript for a school you've attended, AMCAS will find out and request one from you or initiate an investigation. If this happens after your primary has been verified, it will look very bad for you when the med schools get your updated application and see why you left that transcript off.

Just don't do it. It's not worth the risk, and you probably wouldn't be successful. And yes, you are defrauding AMCAS because you have to agree to the terms of the application when you submit it, which state that the application is complete and accurate (i.e. you have submitted transcripts from all schools you've attended).

How bad of a GPA are we talking here? Usually an upward trend can be extremely helpful, and you can use the personal statement or secondaries to explain why you did so poorly at the beginning of your undergraduate career. Good luck!

Well my gpa before was less than a 1.0 because I failed most of the classes I took. Now my gpa is a 3.4 with 27Q on my MCAT, lots of shadowing, extracurriculars and I've volunteered at a free health clinic for the past 15 months

Is that 3.4 GPA including or excluding the poor grades?

That's excluding the poor grades. I just checked out my gpa with the poor grades and there is no way I can apply to allopathic schools bc my gpa is not above the minimum 3.0 that is required. I know that grades can't be replaced through AMCAS, even if you have repeated the course

uhh people have gotten into allopathic schools with GPAs lower than 3.0. I have an idea: how about you raise that really crappy MCAT score? a 40 on the MCAT should wash away those F grades pretty quickly. or invent something or cure something or publish something revolutionary. im not joking either. just how bad do you want to be a doctor? clearly not bad enough if you are willing to cheat your way in.

I agree with Tyc00nman,

That low GPA isn't the only thing holding you back from MD schools. If you retake your MCAT and do considerably better, it would be very much in your favor. Also, a post-bacc would be a good idea. And a 3.0 is not a 'minimum requirement' to get into medical school, although anything less than that will definitely raise some eyebrows.

a 40 mcat isnt going to wash away a sub-3.0 gpa; being a lazy, apathetic student has its consequences. but a 40 mcat, plus some really interesting ECs that constitute research AND clinical work could get you some interviews. it sounds like you shouldn't have a problem getting LORs. but even a 3.4 with a so-so MCAT is going to put you squarely in DO territory.

I am in this a similar situation you have been to. I really need your advice on how you handled this. Now that you are a resident you should know better than me. I have no problem of telling AMCAS about my old institution but I am afraid that it will initiate a question that why my current institution didn't have the transfer credits from the old institution. I have some classes from previous institution that are not transferred to my current institution. I really need you advice please.
