Is it worth paying 30 grand in tuition and 10 grand in living costs for DO school when some MD schools are cheaper? I mean is 40 grand a lot of normal for DO schools? And I don't know much about MD costs but are they kind of equivalent? Because some schools in Florida are cheaper MD schools and the DO schools are 40 is worth going or waiting a year to see if I can get into MD?

I think the only person who can answer that is you. LECOM B and Nova both have "lower" tuition and are in Florida.

What's it worth to you? Remember that a year later means a year longer with out a 6 figure salary....in the big picture. Just something to consider.

In general, for cost, private MD ~ most DO. Check the CIB for school-specific info.

If you're in-state for any school with a residency preference, that's usually your best bet, cost wise. But whether or not it's worth another year to save a potential $100K is up to you. Your yearly salary is likely to exceed that, later... However, there's no guarantee that waiting a year will be as fruitful as hoped.

Just for the record, most DO schools are actually slightly cheaper than comparable private allopathic schools. Comparing a private DO school to a state-supported public allopathic school is not a fair comparison IMHO.

In summary:

Average resident tuition & fees at private MD schools is: 39,742
Nonresident: 40,523

Average tuition and fees at private DO schools for residents: 34,113
Nonresidents: 34,893

Comparing private MD vs private DO schools, DO schools tend to be $4000-$5000 less than private MD schools.

If you can get into your state school, then yes it is a whole heck of a lot cheaper. It also depends on what you plan on doing in that extra year to umprove your app for MD schools. If you plan on shelling out another $60 to complete a post-bac to improve your grades, then one can argue that you might be better off just applying DO now.
