Hey fellow health people. I was looking at a primary care clinic's website the other day which listed staff and was a bit surprized to see a PharmD listed. Under his special interests was listed "primary care." What exactly is primary care pharmacy? I've seen PharmDs working in ICUs, CCUs, general hospital wards, peds wards, etc, and even a smoking cessation clinic, but never one in a primary care setting. Can somebody clue me in as to what a PharmD does in a primary care clinic?

Thanks!

There are many pharmacists in ambulatory care facilities. Primary care seems similar to ambulatory care to me...but I could be off. I think a pharmacist would be in a primary care setting to help monitor INRs of pts on warfarin, check lipids, check BP for pts who are hypertensive. It seems that they might just help monitor and follow-up w/ patients. That's what most ambulatory care pharmacists do and it seems reasonable that they might be found in a primary care clinic.

That would make sense. Ambulatory-care seems fairly synonymous with primary care in most places around here. Coumadin clinics - of course!
