Last year I submitted my primary, but never went on to submit secondaries to any medical school (long story). I am currently re-submitting the primary and I need advise on what to do regarding my personal statement. I wrote one last year and obviously submitted it with the primary. This time around I edited it slightly, but I want to pretty much keep it the same since I think it is perfect. Does it look bad if the PS is pretty much the same or does it not matter since the schools never got secondaries from me. I apologize if this was discussed somewhere previously, but I couldn't find it. Thanks for all you help!!

It wouldn't matter. The school isn't going to dig through their pile of applications in order to scrutinize yours with a greater level of disdain.

have you made changes? or are you submitting the same application with a new personal statement?

I have added a few more work/activities, but nothing else changed over the year. The PS is pretty much the same, just a few changes.

Madame (sdn mentor):

If there is absolutely nothing new or nothing you would change, then a rewrite isn't sensible. (On the other hand, if there is nothing new, then why are you reapplying? Do you expect better results the second time around with the same material?)

I don't know of anyone who goes back and looks at the previous year's application (they aren't readily available). The only time I've caught what you call "a lack of motivation" is when someone recycles a secondary application essay without noticing that the question has changed from the previous year and the old essay no longer fits the bill. Watch out for those secondaries!

Thanks for the reply! The problem was my MCAT (which I retook) and not the rest of the application so I never submitted the secondaries. Therefore, no way of repeating those. I did alter a few things in the app just no significant changes in the personal statement.

i wouldn't bother changing it unless you think there's a significant flaw in it.

If you didn't submit secondaries then the med schools wouldn't have reviewed your app. To them, I'm guessing you are like a new applicant.
