Quick question about Ethics ....
I think Kaplan book by Conrad (or some other sources like a Qbank I might have read) states spouse> parents > adult children> brother but in FA, it's adult children> parents..

Which one is correct?

Thanks!

I'm not sure either, I would go with the ethic's book and this is what I have in my notes after going over 100 cases:

IF NO advance directive--- get surrogate --- 1-spouse—2- parents-3- adult children- 4- siblings- 5- friends –only if there is a split in wishes of family

Adult children have more priority than the parents.

In the case that the pt has not appointed an agent to exercise the medical power of attorney or does not have a court-appointed guardian, a surrogate decision-maker who knows the patient can be chosen. The priority of surrogates, from highest to lowest, is the following: court-appointed guardian, spouse, adult children, parents, adult siblings, other relatives who have maintained close contact with pt, close friends.

Not only is that in FA, but I got the info straight from Dr. Fadem, so I would trust her opinion over Dr. Fischer.

EDIT: It's also enumerated in the Health Care Surrogate Act: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilc...apterName=ESTATES&ActName=Health+Care+Surroga

Thank you for clearing it up for us.

I wanted ask you another question. In Kaplan it says that married person seeking sterilization needs spousal consent, but not for abortion, but I remember learning from previous questions I have done that people have autonomy over their body and so if women wants sterilization she doesn't need consent from her husband.

I think I made a mistake of going over Conrad cases and wasted time... I should have done the one you did. 🙁

Dr. Fadem went over this exact case as well. A person seeking sterilization has full autonomy over his/her body and does not need consent from the spouse.

Fadem's like the Goljan of behavioral science and ethics, so I would trust her word over almost everyone else's.
