Private funding for medical school

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mom and Dad? 😀

Are you looking for information on private scholarships (school-independent) that you can apply for? I would suggest contacting the financial aid offices at schools where you hold an acceptance. They probably have a lot of resources and can help you find something out.

Chad, thanks for your response...

My dad doesn't care if I live or die 🙁 and my "poor" mom (pun intended)can't afford to help😕.

Yes I was asking about school-independent resources. My school just sort of directed me to a website, which was not very helpful. I am also doing research on private funding in the meantime but I haven't been very successful. I was wondering if anyone else knows of other resources...

HELLLLLPPPPP!!!!!!!!!😕

Federal Stafford and Grad Plus loans will be the way to go. If you need to lend from a private source pick a large bank that has been able to stay afloat this financial mess (Citi, Wells Fargo). But, I am not a financial advisor so you may want to contact one.

Try fastweb.com, they have a lot of scholarships and a relatively in depth filtering process.

thanks guys:

Stafford
Grad Plus
Banks
fastweb

Any other resources?? or organizations??

I was going to start a new thread but I found this one in a search so it's good enough.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on using a service life fastweb to find scholarships. I set up my account and filled in my info but most of the stuff that they send me is not medical school specific and doesn't seem to fit me. Thanks and Happy New Year, SDN!!! :hijacked:

Um, Citibank received like over 9000 times more bailout money than any other bank did.

On this note, I've desperately searched for merit-based scholarships not affiliated with medical schools and they seem non-existent. What gives?

yeah there is very little out there for medical students.. i found one, the jack kent cooke foundation, but you need to be nominated by your school and they have massive essays to write.. 🙁

I feel you, Chessknt, I'm in a very similar situation where parents (or in my case, parent) can't help out.

I know this sounds controversial, but have you considered the military? they fund all 4-years of med school, but they require a certain number of years of medical service in return. The Army, Air Force, and Navy (and I think the Marines) all have their own programs with different requirements.

Also, The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) has a similar program for those who are willing to work in underserved areas. You'd have to choose a specialty that would be helpful for that area. (i.e. primary care, OB/GYN, psychiatry). However, no military service, so that's another option.

Also, go here: http://www.aamc.org/students/financing/md2/phase2/start.htm

It's the AAMC section on finding particular sources of funding for med schools. there is a link to a pdf (Sources of Funding During Medical School) that has a 15-page long list places to look for funding. (including private sources)

Now, Chessknt, I know this situation can be very stressful (I'm in it right now), but finding the right sources will require a lot of time and frustrating effort. I'm shaking just thinking about it. Also, keep in mind that you will not need parental info for the FAFSA since you're applying for grad programs! 😀 I'm excited about that.
