So, I didn't qualify for any financial aid from my school, due to not registering for Selective Service. Now I am over the age at which I can still register, and so I am screwed when it comes to Federal Aid. Don't I feel dumb?

So, I have to figure out how to pay for school. Tuition is just under 50 g's, and I can cover living expenses, etc., outside of that.

Can a guy like me, with no collateral, decent credit, and NO CO-SIGNER get a student loan to the tune of 50 grand a year?

HOW????????

I tried Citibank so far, and they rejected me; not sure where to go from there.

It's the 11th hour. I'm scared.

In order to receive federal aid, males are required to register and it seems as if you did not. It is possible for the school to make a judgement call to restore your eligibility but they are not required to (read that as don't call and scream at them on the phone). I've had a few who did not register. Traditionally they are not US born students but immigrants who missed the whole thing and now it's too late. Once you have the "intention" of staying in the US as a non-citizen, you are required to register since that becomes the effective date.
My suggestion is that you call and speak to your FA Office since they are the only ones who can help. Calling Selective Services is basically useless since they are only able to confirm or deny you registered and they don't get into the why etc...
If you have a valid reason for not registering, explain it. You will most defintiely have to present it in a written form at some point in time so the school has documentation in their files to support their decision. If the decision is not in your favor, there is no one you can appeal to since the Dept of Ed stays out of the world of professional judgement of the FA Office. They simply will quote what the law says and don't have the power to bend it.
Worst case: you are looking at all alternative loans and if that's the case, borrow the least amount possible and read all the fine print before you sign. I would also be very clear about lifetime limits and the continuation of funding over your 4 years (some alt loans simply won't allow you to borrow beyond "X")

can i just offer you a little sympathy by saying how unfair this is? if you were female you wouldn't be in this situation at all...

Can you explain why you didn't register for SSS? We don't have a freaking draft in this country, and your risk was essentially zero. If you willfully didn't register, it's hard to sympathize.
