What is call like in private practice? Is it in house or from home? I know this will differ with the setting but I just wanted to hear a few examples of what call is like. Thanks.
from what i hear, some jobs require you to take call while others don't.
of the jobs that require call, some of them make you take it quite often while other jobs don't require call very frequently. also, some places have very busy calls (i.e. you get killed), other places the call nights aren't too bad.

Everywhere you go the call is different. Some places it is very heavy, i.e. you never see the inside of the call room and you have cases running 24-7. Other places in is nothing, beeper call from home and you might do one after hours case per month. Or more likely it will be somewhere in-between those two extremes.
When you interview for your private practice position you need to determine what the call is like, along with determining how you will actually get paid. I have been told that call is nothing only to learn the opposite my first few nights on call at a new job. If you get paid to take call i.e. a fair hourly rate or get to bill for your own cases then heavy call helps your paycheck and is not that bad. If you do not get paid extra for call you will see your actual wage quickly approaching federal minimum wage.
Unfortnatly if you are working for straight salary, an imaginary bonus or hoping to make partner you will be working all those hours and get little or no extra pay. Don't expect the group to be honest about the intensity of call. Far too many times they will lie to you about the intensity and frequency of call. That is why you need to thoroughly investigate a position before signing on by talking to as many ex employees as you can find. If you do not you may have committed yourself to up to a half year of every other day or every third day call with no post call day off while you serve out your notice period.
