I’m recently licensed and joined a private practice as an independent contractor to do psychoeducational evaluations. He provides all the testing materials and office space. At first he gave me referrals too. He offered $90 an hour of the $160 an hour I bill. Recently I’m bringing in more of my own referrals so i asked to increase my rate. He suggested 110/180. This isn’t really more $. Should I ask for more? Or is this reasonable?

I think a lot depends on the going rate for an independent contractor in your city. (I'm talking about mostly therapy here, but I think it still applies.) When I first started I had a 50-50 split. This was par for the course in my city, whereas my friend in another part of the country had a 70-30 split. Eventually, the owner of my practice decided to try a little harder to retain clinicians and so he went to a 60-40 split. That is about in line with what you are describing. That said, if you are bringing in a significant chunk of your own referrals, I would ask for more. There is one practice in town here that gives a different split based on the source of the referral. Would he do that?

Good luck!
