I'm always a bit nervous about calling what I do "private practice". To me that conjures up images of small offices... What would one call private sector, community-based practice in a large (>100 physicians) multi-specialty organization? Corporate practice? Ideas?

1. I need the money.

2. I've hated school since I was 12.

3. I'm not a good teacher.

4. I hate taking orders and academic/hospital politics (and meetings).

I agree w/OPD, thinking as I am about whoring myself out to Kaiser for outpatient work, which I don't really think of as private practice!

Good point, OPD. I guess it is a form of private practice as well. May be I should have added another category and called it "corporate practice". But we do have the other-please explain category too.

Well, I "voted" for private plus academia, since it's private sector, but a teaching program...

I voted for "other" since community outpatient psychiatry is not private practice and not academia.

Can you please elaborate on your plans. My guess is that you will be working at more than one community mental health center in a metropolitan area.

Haven't nailed down a placement exactly yet (will after fellowship training), but plan is to work as medical director/staff psychiatrist in community mental health center working with underserved populations. May consider adjunct faculty affiliation with medical center, but definitely not academic psychiatry.
