Does anyone in this forum plan on going into private practice in internal medicine as opposed to fellowship? For those already out there - what is private practice like? What are the perks - setting your own schedule, not having to admit to hospitals therefore getting nights and weekends off with no call? Can you incorporate what you want into your practice such as wt loss management, nonsurgical aesthetic procedures etc - or is the task of having to take care of every chart on the door within 15min or less too time consuming? Whats the average starting salary for graduating residents in the private world?

Anyone? It just seems as if most everyone who goes into IM go just to to specialize.

hi. i actually am one of the lone few contemplating private practice. i am torn between this, hospitalist, and academic med.

i am usually the only one in the room who reveals i am interested in "general internal medicine" and the one not subspecializing. i think about 80% subspecialize.

wish i could tell you what private practice is like, because i most definitely would love to hear more about it myself! anyone? anyone? (bueller?)
