i am kind of worried, i am going into my fith year of undergrad. my major is electrical engineering, and i didnt decide to pursue medicine until the end of my 3rd year. problem is first 3 years i didnt really care and did awful in most of my classes and did NO extracuricculars

Since then i've finished all my science classes including ochem, microbio, and physiology with a 3.9+ gpa. I also got involved in hospital volunteering and clinical research. I havent taken the mcat yet but i figure i can get around a 35 because i have strong knowledge of physics and bio.

But problem is my overall gpa is still like a 3.35 and mY ECs are clearly lacking b/c i did nothing for 3 years!!!

Will med schools consider overlooking past my first 3 years ?? I took a pretty hefty courseload the past year juggling 3 science classes w/ engineering class this past year.

any suggestions? i am thinking of talking about my situation in my personal statement

SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH.

Your GPA is in the dangerous range, but the upward trend will help a lot. How high will your GPA be when you apply? Can you raise it to the imaginary bar that is 3.5??

A 35 MCAT will make you pretty damn appealable, especially to state schools.

Get the LOR's and make sure you are doing EC's now. You can even write about your learning experience and new found dedication in a great personal statement.
That GPA won't sink you if everything else is in order. If anything is stellar, it will only be a brief question in interview. 😉

1. Relax many do not know they want to be a DOC till later, I thought I would be happy as an RN, WRONG!!!LOL

2. GPA is a little low for a lock but you can get in with that, a good MCAT like posted above but I think 32 and above is fine from what I see.

3.Now you know what you want get obsessed and go for IT! ( I did) :luck:

Med school won't discriminate if you take an extra year to figure things out. In fact, it is a great way to boost your application. You can get good grades (further improving your GPA and upward trend), further your volunteer experience, and gain some maturity and assuredness that this is the right career for you. They are looking for that big time. If you don't mind waiting, I would do a limited application your first year to get your feet wet and then hit schools hard your next, applying to a broad spectrum. You never know who you'll impress and who will impress you. If you can do it, apply as early as possible. Application date won't affect a spectacular candidate in the end, but it WILL be a big boost to borderline candidates.

You should be okay with that GPA if your MCAT will be as good as you think.
