I know that cc vs university threads have been done to death ( I searched 😀) but I am still wondering something..

I am currently taking classes at a community college and taking all of the pre reqs in hopes that I can get into pharmacy school. The issue that I am wondering about is the degree itself. It is just an A.A degree in Pharmacy and I am worried if will be hard to get into a universitiy with something like that. The degree itself is just mostly all of the prereqs for the specific pharmacy school that I want to attend.

This is fine, but I also realize the very real possiblity of not getting into pharmacy school. Do you guys think that it would be better to major in another science related field and then get all of the pre reqs along with that specific major?

I am thinking about majoring in a speciic science related field and then taking the prereqs over the course of my academic career. I know that this will take more time but I don't want to get a 2 year degree in something that is useless either. As I've already siad, the two year degree that I am going for looks to be based soley on the prereqs of a specific pharmacy school and that looks like it may be putting too many eggs in one basket.

Thoughts?

I'm having trouble extracting what question(s) it is you're trying to get answered. A few things that hopefully will cover it/them:

1. If you're talking about which degree you get from CC, then it doesn't really matter. My CC offered an AA in Pharmacy Technology, but that was for pharmacy technicians. While I took most of the classes, it had nothing to do with the prereqs for pharmacy. I don't know of a CC that offers an AA or AS for completing pharmacy prereqs as an AA in Pharmacy. I did get an AS in both Biology and Chemistry while completing my prereqs.

2. If you are only doing your prereqs, university level courses probably outrank CC courses only because there is an assumed (and probably somewhat legitimately) superiority of university instruction over CC instruction. So, while you can get in, and many people do, with only CC courses, it's not a level playing field and it could present issues down the line.

3. If you plan on eventually completing a BS/BA then the CC issue is no longer an issue as they'll be able to tell that you can handle both CC level and University level learning environments. Most of my prereqs were taken at the CC level, but with my BS in Biochemistry, I never had to answer any questions about it, nor did it prevent me from getting any interviews, despite my 3.9ish CC GPA vs my 3.4ish University GPA.

I hope that helps.

My CC has a similar Pharmacy degree. I opted to major in biological sciences, which has nearly the same requirments. I would check and see if there is another major with nearly similar requirements, so that if pharmacy school doesnt work out, you may have an easier time transfering to a university. Atleast that is my plan..👍

This is what I think would be best for me too.

I would like to have a good backup plan just in case. The only problem is that my cc only offers very few A,A degrees that are science related. I think the only other one that even come close to being relevant is biology.

I am thinking about trying to meet all the pre reqs for a university and possibly majoring in something like biochemistry. That way I will have most of the pre reqs out of the way and I will at least have something to show for it. Of course this is more time and may be needless, but I am trying to weigh this against the fact that I may not even get into pharmacy school. Maybe I am just being negative about the whole thing🙄
