if I'm looking at different programs, and I'm making a check list, what would your top 5 procedures be that you think are a mainstay for future FM doc?? flex sigmoid, colposcopy, gyn, dermatology, EGD, vasectomy, etc. Just curious. 🙂

Procedures are definitely important! I'm looking to learn: culposcopy (standard with most programs), colonoscopy (NOT just flex sig... bc these are becoming less and less utilized in today's practices), EGD, skin excisions and biopsy, cryotherapy, and stress tests. I realize that most urban hospitals will not let you practice these things; however, I plan to work in a very rural Georgia town that already permits its fam docs do such things (esp. seeing as how there are no derms, ob's, etc in the area... and only a twice a week cardiologists and gastroenterologists... ). Besides procedures, I'm also only looking at programs with an electronic medical record (see the Future of Family Medicine report or the latest FP report for support of this notion).

you brought up an interesting point. So some hospitals forbid their FM docs from some procedures? B/C they are "to close"?? I'm just wondering how the gastroenterologist feels when he trains me in colonoscopy and sigmoid and EGD, that maybe I'll hang my shingle across the street and steal patients. My view is, I'll screen and then refer to him. 😀
