Hello,

I had a psych program cancel an interview for Feb 7 today on Feb 1 via voicemail. They said it is too late in the interview season for it to be worth their time to interview me.

I had already purchased plane tickets. Should I ask for renumeration? What would you do? Anyone have a situation like this? I booked this interview months ago.

Thanks.

Yikes. Unfortunately, I think programs are in a position where they can extend and withdraw interview invitations at will. That said, it's not nice to withdraw an invitation on such short notice (even though they can), and I'm sorry to hear you've found yourself in this situation.

I don't know that there's anything you can do about it. You could ask if they'd be willing to pay your cancellation fee, seeing as how you booked months ago -- you don't really have anything to lose at this point.

I had this happen to me as well. The secretary canceled it on me via email early in the season due to a schedueling conflict. I wrote her back and explained that I had already purchased tickets and was out $300. I cc'd the letter to the program director and department chair. Got a phone call immediately appologizing and they "un-canceled" my interview. It's rude when programs do this- and you have every right to let them know.

holy crap. 😱 that's horrible. i thought once an interview's scheduled it's a done deal short of interviewer/interviewee death. ugh.
