😕 I am in need of advice. I am in a residency program that has become malignant. After I matched, a new program director was hired and got rid of ALL of the attendings that had been working there for years. The PD brought in his friends/former colleagues from where he previously resided. None of these people are interested in teaching or education at all. We are not learning. We are just minions doing as the boss directs. This is concerning as I am a first year and need to learn my craft.

Have any of you experienced something like this?

It's likely pretty rare because in most fields a PD is often a different person than the department chair, so he generally wouldn't have the power to hire/fire non-residents and bring in his own people. But if the PD is also the chairman, it's conceivable. Malignancy comes from the top down, so if the PD/chair isn't resident friendly, the place will follow that lead. There is a difference between "not learning" and malignancy however. Malignancy suggests a culture of abuse. Your post doesn't really suggest that, although that may be the natural progression at a place where everybody simply does there jobs with no teaching. Even so, your best option is just to keep your head down and simply bolster your own education by stepping up the reading on your own; There are also ways of winning over attendings and getting them to teach you even if they don't feel it's in their job description, once you get a little more experienced.

This sucks. I think your choices are
1) try to get along w/these new attendings and PD, and "bloom where you are planted"
2) think of some excuse to bail/transfer (but would somehow have to do it without ticking off your current PD, which may be hard...I'd suggest giving some excuse like you need to move for family reasons, etc.)

Tough spot to be in..... but remember the golden rule, Fake it until you make it. You're almost done this year and it won't be much longer until you move on and up and out. Keep a stiff upper lip!

so nobody has control over PD's decision?

what abt hospital administration? aren't they noticing any change?
