First of all, congrats to all you fourth year students who matched for residency!

I can't believe I'm in the middle of fellowship interview season ... My pocketbook is starving for some greenbacks again.

For those of you who are interviewing for fellowship during residency, I wanted to compare notes on program policies for interviewing during non-vacation days. My program has a policy where if you interview during an elective on a non-vacation day, you get a vacation day taken away from you. If you have to be gone for two days during your elective (say 2 interviews in the same city), you will get 2 vacation days taken away. Do your programs have similar policies?

At my program every interview day was a vacation day.

At my program, we received 5 non-vacation days to interview while on elective. But if you interviewed on service, you just had to payback the resident covering for you. Therefore, we had some considerable flexibility. Albeit, you had to find someone to cover for you.

2nd and 3rd years in my program were given 5 days (non-wards or ICU) to interview. There was also a semi-formal trade system to get coverage during call months if needed. Our vacations were scheduled @ the beginning of the year so if you knew you were going to need to use some of that time for interviews, you'd have to request time off in Feb- April.
