Hi everyone,

I am starting to compare the programs that I interviewed at, but I feel that my one "interview" day was not enough. Second looks are not an option so I thought I would ask about other people's impressions of some specific schools.

1) I would like to know more about CHOC. For instance, the future of the program, the competitiveness. Is this a program that is struggling to find resident or are they competitive? Are the residents happier this year?

2) Children's Hospital of Oakland. What did people think about this program all around.

3) UC Davis, same as above.

Thank you all for your help.

Hi Jaybie,

I'm a 2nd year resident at CHOC who can answer some of your questions. Competitiveness of the program I would say is about as competitive as most medium size programs in California and the West coast in general. There is a brief overview by the National Association of Children's Hospitals that gives a summary of the awards and distinctions that CHOC holds.

A great aspect of this program is that the program director is very receptive to the needs of the residents. Last year was a busy year. Thus, this year we started a "Hospitalist" service. Basically its a third team on with you during call. While on the ward service, the intern takes every third admit. Teams are capped at 20.

Compared to last year, I would say the flow is more manageable and there is more time to teach on call nights than before. I can now be one of those "older" residents that can say back in my day... Seriously as a senior, I greatly appreciate the time to sit down, admit a patient, do some EBM reading on treatment and teach medical students. We are still a busy hospital with a high volume. But now, its more manageable.

I hope that helps regarding your questions about CHOC.
