I guess what have you guys heard from your school's respective clerkship directors, residency directors, and attendings on their opinion on programs to apply to?

My clerkship director listed programs like colorado and UAB as being IM programs that are not as recognized as other top tier places but definately a place one should consider applying to because of good training reputation.

Both those programs will give you a solid training with good fellowship prospects (although, you would have to not mind living in Birmingham [which I'm sure is a fine place, but some people consider a move to the south or the midwest, unless it's Chicago, a move down])

Basically, I think if you can find your way to just about any university medicine program you'll get a good training in internal med with good fellowship potential - looks like regionally (the midwest and the south) is where you are talking, I think a few places that are also good programs, although less "glamorous" per reputation than the common "top ten" that always get bandied about would be UofMinnesota, UofIowa, UofKansas, Creighton, Texas A&M Scott&White, and I'll lump UofUtah in here because it kind of sit out there by itself . . . now this is NOT to say that any program not mentioned sucks, just that these are some places, off the top of my head, I have no problem recommending someone check out.

I know someone who went to UAB IM residency and liked it...apparently they have meetings at which they solicted resident feedback about improving rotations, etc. We never had that at my IM program.

Colorado seems to be a cushy program with a lot of elective time. Considering how cushy it is (described by fellows I know who did residency there) they have a pretty good fellowship match. The folks who matched at top fellowships seem to have done chief residency and/or significant research, though.

Oregon health sciences-- very good, very under-rated!
