Q geared mainly towards Admin or those involved in resident selection....

We always hear about applicants that are disappointed in their match- but what about the other way around? I'm assuming programs also just learned of their match list at 1:00 today... are programs ever bummed out?

Not feeling very confident about where I matched, maybe just paranoid- but didn't get the feeling they were too excited/happy about me during the IV. The PD actually blew me off for a procedure smack dab in the middle of interviewing me (he was polite about it, sort of) I'd hate to go into residency knowing I was at the bottom of their list and their last choice ;(

Feeling a pit in my stomach.

PDs have been disappointed with their matches, for sure.

That said... it's mostly paper disappointment.

When the residents show up, it's up to them to show the program what they can do. Low ranked applicants can and have been stars in the big leagues. High ranked applicants can and have been duds.

That is reassuring... this whole process is so anxiety producing! I know the Chief really liked me, he introduced me to faculty very warmly "We need to make sure matches here" etc... but the PD not so much. Oh well, guess i'll just hafta knock their socks off!!

Can/Do programs ever withdraw their match via waiver (applicants can submit a waiver, can programs?)? This is an advanced position to start in 2016

Waiver requests are investigated by the NRMP. You can't just waiver a match away.

OP, if you matched there I'm sure you were ranked pretty highly. If they didn't like your application they wouldn't have invited you to interview at all. There aren't that many interview slots to hand out, and plenty of applicants. I don't think it's common for programs to go down to the bottom of their lists, so you were certainly higher.

I think we all have a tendency to read too much into things that have nothing to do with us during this process. I doubt the PD's actions had anything to do with you whatsoever. Congrats on matching!

Thank you for your congrats! I'm sure that i'm completely overthinking/over-reading- needed the reminder! Thanks again
😉

Sometimes we fill from the very tippy top of the list. Sometimes we go much lower. No matter which names pop up on my list, no matter where they were placed for purposes of ranking, they instantly become my very favorite applicants and the ones I was hoping to get all along. And I do my best while they are here to make them glad they matched here, even if I suspect my program wasn't actually their first choice (not that I'll ever know for certain).

That is so sweet!! I can only hope the program environment/philosophy at my match is just as kind! You just made me (and many others) feel a million times better! Now its time for all of us to enjoy the weekend 😉

They liked you (obviously)...they probably just weren't the best at expressing their emotions.
