How hard is it to match these programs a DO: Montefiore, St Lukes, Long Island, SUNY Downstate, NYM, Maimonides? I saw their names in resident match lists(except for NYM). And also I saw a disproportional amount of NYCOM students at those programs. Does it mean that if they do take DO students, they prefer NYCOM or whoever takes an acting internship at the program is given equal consideration?
And another question I have: I feel I would have done better in my med school admissions process if I had certain interpersonal communications skills or leadership skills and/or if I got stronger LOR. I have a foreign accent. I stutter during interviews. First thing interviewers tell me when I open my mouth is "why are you so nervous?". Sometimes they can tell I am tense/nervous even by the way I walk. I have absolutely no problem with academic workload (except for a poor gpa in 1st years of ugrad) and will have no problem getting 250+ on step1. Do you think if someone gets rejected by all those nyc programs listed above then he will get rejected everywhere in the country? Or are those programs competitive enough that even if you can match somewhere else you still should not count on nyc?
Also is it helpful to do research to match anesthesiology? Being DO I obviously would not apply to elite programs like Columbia, NYU,etc. But do the other programs care about research? How about any other extracurricular activities? Is there anything outside of school that really beefs up your application for anesthesiology? Or it's just step1, performance on rotations, and interview?
Thank you!
