I have a question for my fellow EM residents out there. What do your programs do to check that you are reading Tintanalli/Rosens/journals etc?

We have assigned Rosen chapters each week and the have an hour during our conference day where 3rd year residents make a PowerPoint of multiple choice, board style questions from the assigned chapters and we go around one by one and answer the questions. The hour is somewhat boring and not that educational. I'd like to suggest to our chiefs some alternatives, so I wanted to see what you do at your program. The chiefs want a way to make sure we read, while doing some review. Thanks for your help.

10 Question quiz every other week, which we have to turn in. Average scores are reviewed during bi-manual evaluations.

bi-manual is that a Freudian slip, spending to much time doing gyne? 😛

Yikes! Now that is really punitive! Sometimes our program inserts a metal rectal probe, and every time we get a question wrong they give about 300 joules to help wake us up. I kinda like it...

More frequently, however, there is no formal evaluation of our reading. We read an assigned chapter(s), then we discuss the reading and related subjects that are relevant to ED management in a group with residents/attendings. Sometimes we have questions to guide the discussions, but they are not scored or handed in.

A couple of weeks ago, we had a joint panel of Trauma and ED attendings. ED Residents and the panel discussed C-spine protocol as it related to our trauma management, and several articles that reviewed the whole CT vs XR for C-spine issue. We had case scenarios presented during the discussion for guidance.

We have topic based blocks, PD's etc review the literature and we go over the questions in the back (often EM practice). There is tintanalli reading that is supplemental. We have case reviews that are presented over the same topic.

We don't have a formal evaluation process to ensure reading. However, since the articles etc are done in a small group, it would be very obvious.....
