Is there a list some where of rad onc programs that give a fully year of research time (non-Holman). I know I've seen that on here, but can't seem to find it....

I will save you the blow of what is coming, this comes up frequently and the answer is that there is no answer becase a lot of mid-tier programs are fluid in their research time. Many will work to give up to a year for people interested even though they traditionally do 6 months. There are a few programs which guarentee a year for everyone like Duke, Stanford, UChicago etc but again, those are not the only ones.

If a program offers you a year of research during your final year of residency (PGY-5), it is sub-optimal because:

1. You will not have any data published from your one-year research when you are looking for jobs; if you are looking for academic positions, this is obviously a problem
2. I personally would feel uncomfortable if I didn't finish my residency with several months of "strong" clinical rotations; in my opinion this last-minute experience is important in your transition to an independent attending

I also agree with ramsesthenice above. While the programs he quoted have dedicated research years, these can change year to year depending on the whim of the Chair. If it is important to you, be sure to ask this question during your interviews.

For those who have gone through the residency process or are in it now, how important are programs where faculty have 1-2 days of dedicated academic days off that are protected? Are you more productive as a resident (if you want to be) from a research standpoint? Or is that really a myth since you will be answering pages/phone calls catching up on contours and dictations, and seeing the unscheduled sick OTVs?

There's not always just a set number of research months at programs. For instance, my program can give you between 8 months and 12 months of research, depending on your preference, the type of project you pursue, preference for a couple more electives, etc.

Although things change as noted above, to make things a little easier, I will share a list I have from my interview experience/hearsay. This is 12 months of research for non-holman

JHU, Yale, Michigan, Harvard, MSKCC, U Florida, Wash U, UAB, UCLA (academic track), Chicago, not sure about Wisc and MDACC I believe they do as well. Hope that helps and it's obviously not a complete list.

I believe Wisconsin is 6 months, and I'm pretty sure UAB is 6 months as well.

I saw on another thread that Ohio State and Beaumont gave 12 months as well, but that is hear say.

Yep, 12 months at MDACC an option.

At Wisconsin, we get 7.5-10 months of research. If you have ongoing projects, and are looking to go into academics, they will (and have) given a fourth research block in your Chief year to finish them. In speaking with my colleagues at other programs, I believe that we have more academic days (and therefore, time for research) during our clinical time, as we have two academic days on all but two of our rotations (GYN and H&N). We do allow residents to pursue the Holman pathway and one of our PGY-2's will be starting that in July.

I hope this helps and best of luck to all of the current and future applicants. 🙂
