What are your thoughts on residency programs with no psychiatry rotations during the intern year? (ie. only medicine/neuro/family)

I didn't know any such programs existed in this day and age... The RRC (the governing body that makes the rules for ACGME residencies) does not require a full year of med/peds and neuro so I don't know how ANY program would justify that. And besides that, how would they fit in all the required PSYCH rotations?? I would double check with whatever program you are talking about to make sure that there hasn't been some misunderstanding. Back in the day, it used to be that psych residents would do a rotating intern year in medicine and then start psych in their second year (kinda like modern day neuro), but I thought that had gone by the wayside. Anyway, double-check... 🙂

The program I was looking at is UT-Houston.

"PGY-1 residents will do 4 months of Internal Medicine (including Ambulatory Care and Emergency Medicine), 4 months Pediatrics and 4 months Neurology through different affiliated hospitals."

So, yeah, I found it odd at first too. I heard they have less electives fourth year to compensate.

The downside to this is that you're likely unable to fast-track into a child/adolescent fellowship after PGY-3, since you'll still have adult requirements left to fulfill. 4 months of peds? Ugh!
