I'm planning to do some sort of service/volunteer (somewhat large scale) project that positively affects the community and I was wondering if anyone had done some before or know of those who have that was medically related in some manner.

Thanks!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Seriously, what others have done won't help you. First you should assess the needs of your community and then determine where your skills can help to address an unmet need. If you have specific medically-related skills, then those may come into play but if you don't have skills then it might be best to focus on an unmet need that meshes with the skills that you do have (e.g. tutoring in academic subjects, collection/distribution of food, clothing, toiletries, etc.) Here's one example: Getting unused food from college cafeterias to soup kitchens is something that takes a lot of legwork but which can help meet a need for fresh produce, etc at soup kitchens.

This link has lots of ideas that have worked in one community:

But again, look at the needs in your community before launching a project. A project need not be medically related to be of interest to adcoms. Also, food & nutrition programs can be seen as addressing malnutrition including obesity which is a major health issue. Tutoring and literacy is very important if people are going to have the ability to follow written instructions from their doctor or pharmacist and keep detailed records about their health. So, in the end, much of what you can do in the community can be related back to health.
