Okay maybe I've been at this too long but I'm not quite getting whats going on here with Prolactin.

"Although the hypothalamus has a stimulatory effect on the release of all other anterior pituitary hormones, it mainly inhibits the release of prolactin. The art of suckling, which stimulates the hypothalamus to stimulate the anterior pituitary to release prolactin, inhibits the menstrual cycle."

Its saying that the hypothalamus does not stimulate the anterior pituitary for the release of prolactin, but then it says that it does stimulate the hyopthalamus to stimulate the anterior pituitary.

Is this contradictory to anyone else?

From EK Bio Lec 5 btw.

That sounds like they mean that suckling stimulates the hypothalamus to stop inhibiting prolactin release.

Prolactin is unique. It is not stimulated for release like the other anterior pituitary hormones. Prolactin normally is under active inhibition by dopamine from the hypothalamus. Stimuli such as suckling is able to turn off the dopamine inhibition, thereby allowing prolactin release. In other words, prolactin release is turned on by turning off an "off switch," while the other anterior pituitary hormones are released simply by an "on switch."
