pronounce worcester???

Hello All.
this is probably a silly question but I am going to ask anyway.
can anyone give me any hints about how to pronounce worcester?
I am from nyc, and when I called to ask them a question, they pronounced it soooooo different from me, (i said it similarly to westchester but that's wrong apparently), can anyone give me any hints??😛

i don't know for sure, but worcestershire is pronounced 'worst-er sher', so i'm inclinced to think it's 'worst-er'

You're right...this is a silly-ass question but I'll help anyways. I'm guessing eelo knows how to say it but "wooster" looks like it should be pronounced like "booster". It's not a "woo" but a "wus"...like that guy is such a frigin wus, so it's wus-ter.

I lived in Boston, and I heard it pronounced as "wista" also. Make sure you pronounce it right or people will get on your case 😛

It's definitely better if you pronounce it right. You don't want to embarass yourself at an interview there.

Worcester is one of those words the British leave the syllable out of. Much like Leicester (lester). New Englanders keep the native pronunciation, give or take an "r".

If you're not from Mass. saying wista/wister will make you sound funny (i.e, if you don't have the rest of the accent, it won't go with your speech pattern). I stand by wuss-ter for those not from the region.

LOL! I was actually thinking about that, how I will sound saying it since I am not from MA, and that word will not go with my regular speech! I think I can manage with wusster, hehe.

The pronunciation of the city actually came up in my interview there! It was more of a "hey, nobody knows how to say it" type of conversation!

But it's wus-ta (or wus-ster) like others said!

My boyfriend is from Worcester. He pronounces it "Wistah" but he told me to say "Wuster." I am a Floridian, so "Wistah" or "Wustah" sounds stupid when I say it. If you are not from Mass, don't try to say words like they do. It will most likely sound strained and unnatural. FYI: people from different areas of Mass will say it slightly differently.
