Hey guys, I'm going to be applying in the upcoming cycle and I was wondering about how schools verify the ECs, Volunteer Activities, paid work, etc.

Some of the things that I plan on putting down in the "professional experience" section were from a long time ago (freshmen year), I'm a senior now and some of my supervisors/advisers have left. I worked for a company during freshmen year and I doubt they would even know who I was.

How do they verify the ECs?

Some secondaries will ask for contacts at each of your positions (names, addresses, phone numbers, etc.) but it's probably very rare for adcom members to actually take the time to call. I did have a school contact one of the dentists I shadowed, however, so you never know.

Really, the proof will be in the pudding at the interview. If they ask you about an activity that you bluffed, they'll be able to detect the bull**** in your answer from a mile away.

Bottom line: they usually don't verify but be honest on your applications. You're going to (electronically) sign a bunch of things on AADSAS and secondaries for each school that say if you lied they can revoke your acceptance (or even DEGREE) at any time. Totally not worth it.

It's basically an honor system. As far as I know, there is no official checking of ECs. They will however ask you about them in your interviews so if you can't describe what you actually did, they will catch you on it.

thanks for the info guys

I'm not planning on lying or anything. I've done the work. It's just that some of my supervisors are no longer in contact or wouldn't recognize me.

Same, its toughing applying jobs and I have to mark "do not contact" for reference/verification. They wouldn't recognize/remember me at all. I learned my lesson. Always keep in touch/leave on good note in the future with people that may validate/give you a reference.

They can verify your employment through the human resource department even if your past supervisor and co-workers no longer work there.
