I'm working on KCOM's secondary (what exposure do you have to osteopathic medicine...) and I don't know what phrase or term is the "proper" one to use.

1. Osteopath
3. DO
4. Doctor of Osteopathy
5. Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Example sentence: I've had the opportunity to shadow two "______"...

I'm sure it doesn't matter, but I am hoping for some feedback anyway.

Scratch off option 1. Since that could be confused with osteopaths in other countries, which are not medical physicians but practice osteopathy with a bachelors degree.

Use either 3 or 5

Option 1 refers to osteopaths who are basically like foreign chiropractors (only manipulate, no license to practice medicine).

Option 4 sounds a lot like option 1 to me. Probably not the same, but Osteopathy is manipulation only in my minds eye.

Definitely use #3 or #5.

I'd Say D.O., Doctor of Osteopathic med (this is usually too long though) or just Osteopathic Physician

I'd use D.O., they're well aware of the initials after their name stand for...

i am just curious other than talking about shadowing experience, how else can one answer this question?

Osteopathic physician, osteopathic medical student, osteopathic medicine.

That should cover everything.

Osteopath and osteopathy are older terms. In general, these terms have fallen out of favor and their use is discouraged. However, you'll still find some DOs, especially older ones, that are fine with these terms. The more modern, preferred (i.e., safer) terms to use today are DO, osteopathic physician, Dr of Osteopathic Medicine.

3 or 5 depending on how many characters u need to conserve lol

Physician, osteopathic physician, doctor, DO , doc of osteopathic med, etc are all fine to use. I used them all interchangeably and no one said anything about it during interviews.

Don't read too much into the actual terms used to describe a DO. If your PS/secondary offers a compelling reason/motivation for you pursuing medicine then the little stuff like this won't really matter.

My $0.02: I've had the opportunity to shadow two osteopathic physicians/ DOs.

What happened to option 2?

I was fooled by this as well... If you look at the numbers,DO is actually labeled #3

Nothing wrong with it

Look what's you've done MedPR, you've confused us all! 😉

Maybe s/he has a vendetta against the number 2?🙄 If MedPR designed elevators s/he might skip 2nd floor altogether. 1,3,4.... Talk about honeybadger pro status!

I would go with option 2 but that's just me
