Pros of both:

1. High salaries
2. Exciting field with high-profile cases

Cons of both:

3. Long, hard residency
4. Long hours after residency

Cons of CT surgery:

5. With the increase in non-/minimally-invasive procedures being performed by Vascular Surgeons, Cardiologists, and Radiologists, the need for CT surgeons is dwindling. Jobs opportunities are hard to find and the population of those currently in the field is fairly young (i.e. not diminishing any time soon).
6. Along with the above, preventive medicine is advancing to the point that it is feasible for CT surgeons' case list to be reduced to congenital malformations in young children at some point in the not-too-distant future.

1-4 are subjective. Some may find that 3 and 4 diminish the value of 1 and 2 in these fields as there are many other specialties that fit the description of 1 and 2. Some may find that 1 and 2 diminish the value of 3 and 4. However, 5 is a fact and 6 is highly likely. This list is certainly not exclusive. There are many factors that play in to what an individual sees as the pros and cons of a particular field.
