So a lot of posters on here seem to be fit and healthy. I am looking into buying some protein bars to eat quickly while on the fly between cases or during a break/down time. Do any of you purchase protein bars at a store or online?

Of course the perfect combo would be high protein, low fat, great taste, and relatively inexpensive. Let me know which ones you like and where you buy them from.

Fitrx.com has some of the best prices online....when it comes to protein bars the Brand Name is probably the most important thing for the sole reason that the bars are marketed as "supplements" not "food" so they avoid regulation by FDA. That means that a lot of the smaller companies dont put correct information on the nutrition label...if anyone remembers those "Detour" or "U Turn" protein bars like 3-4 years ago that tasted like candy...well it was close to candy. Any reputable brand will usually give you whats on the label however.

As far as quality I buy the lean body bars by Lee Labrada and TriOPlex by Chef Jay. Lean body bars have an overall better protein/carb/fat ratio but Chef Jays throws in more of the carbs and unsaturated fats in an attempt to make their bar fill you up (good to eat if u need fuel for 4 hours+ which is what i usually get out of it). Labrada also makes a cookie dough bar which you can microwave for 10 seconds and it comes out chewy and warm, freakin delicious! I highly recommend those two brands but MetRx puts out some good quality bars if you wanted to browse their catalog online.

Hope that helps...

I like the Met-RX Protein Plus - only 310 calories per bar with 32grams of protein. I usually eat a bar and a half so that's about 460calories and almost 50 grams (!) of protein. The taste is pretty good but it's a little chewy so a cup/bottle of water is good. I haven't had a problem feeling hungry afterward, so it's a pretty good meal replacement.

Has anyone found a protein bar that doesn't have peanuts in it? I'm not talking about the "made on equipment that also processes..." garbage but actually in the ingredient listing. All the ones I've looked at lately have peanut flour in the ingredients. This leaves only the protein shakes which are a lot less convenient.

Most protein bars are still full of sugar alcohols, which I'm not a big fan of. Since I'm back on my keto diet, I've forsaken the bars for different types of jerky.

Works.

BTW, I'm always a fan of Labrada's product line.

Before that the Pure Protein bars ended up having 1/2 the protein and 2X the fat on the label.

Buyer beware.

From what I recall, the ClifBar Mojo bars (at least some of them) had no peanuts. Up until a couple of months ago, I could get them at Walmart for around a buck.

Hate the south beach bars as they have carageenan which doesn't sit well with my stomach (seems to happen to quite a few people).

TRIO bars are pretty good, although their content is 16/18/9 (fat/carb/protein) mainly due to the almonds. These are 20 for $17 at Costco.

Interesting...I use carrageenan in my homebrewing recipes as a fining agent to remove the haze from beer (it's marketed as Irish Moss for brewers). As far as I know, it's made from seaweed. 'Spose it makes sense to be in a protein bar, though, as it's basically just made up of large, positively-charged proteins.

Dude, it sucked hard the day I found out about those. I knew it was too good to be true. I felt like I was in that Seinfeld episode with the fat free ice cream.

Have you ever tried using the egg beaters egg white 16oz cartons? They are 48g protein, and do not taste that bad. I try to avoid protein bars as much as possible, and would rather have egg whites because of the higher bioavailability. Make sure to take digestive enzymes if you eat a few containers.

Do you guys have time during residency to go to the gym 3-4x a week? Also how do you maintain a proper diet to support lean mass during your hectic work day? Seems like you guys barely have time to eat at lunch. Optimally, it would be best to eat every 3 hours or so, but it seems impossible to pull off as a resident.

Man I love it when the world of bodybuilding and homebrewing intersect.

Unless you really are crazy busy with work and home life, there is always time to work out, even if it is just 20 minutes a particular day.

Fortunately, we have a gym at the hospital I train so a lot of the Residents will be able to get a workout in during a slow period.

Also, I have rarely seen an "obese" anesthesiologist. I think we as a whole do a nice job in staying in shape. I've been trying to cut down a little to get real lean but I am thinking it is time to invest in some protein bars for in between cases. Powerbars look to be a good choice plus you can get them for less than a $1/bar on ebay.

i hope i have enough time...if you superset back and chest together, do legs and bis, then shoulders/tris thats a full body workout in 3 days that is intense as hell.
Not to mention supersetting burns a lot of calories and makes u sweat a ton to keep that spare tire off from the drug rep lunches

Seriously fellas, check out www.crossfit.com. Workouts in ~20 min. or less, most are high metabolic demand, olympic lifts to build explosiveness. You will see gains in your shoulder press, bench press, squat, hang clean and deadlift - guaranteed! (I am a guy who has lifted "conventionally" his whole life and considered myself to be in good shape - until I started CrossFit.=)

Google "metabolic drive protein bars." They are the best tasting protein bars in my opinion. Honestly look forward to eating them. I've tried many protein bars in between rotations, on the go, during rounds, etc and they all get the job done, but after trying these I'm spoiled.

I knew you couldn't pass this one up. Amen on the crossfit thing. World's Perfect Workout, unless you have a bad lower back and eyes that are bigger than your guns. This won't help if you're trying to get big, but if trying to maintain a lean frame while facebooking it up in a 10 hour crani, I have really been pleased with the longevity of Muscle Milk Lite. At only 100 calories, 21 grams of protein, and a good balance of unsaturated fats, I've been able to drop almost 20 lbs of ass-fat in the last couple of months. I use it in conjunction with assorted protein bars/sunflower seeds as a meal.

amen to muscle milk. I would love to drink that all day long. Never get sick of them. Costco sells lites at 24pack for like $27ish = not too bad. This is how I got through my surgery and anesthesia rotations.
