I'll be starting my job search in a few months and I want to get a Peds job that would qualify for PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) so my loans are forgiven within 7 years (residency gives me 3 years). I know it has to be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization....what are some examples of those places I can work?

I would like to hear if anyone has successfully done this, specifically with Peds. I did do a forum search and read some threads on PSLF (over in the Financial Aid forum), but they were not Peds specific so that is not helpful to me. I am open to both outpatient and hospitalist Peds jobs. I'm open to working in an underserved area. Just want to hear what kinds of Peds jobs should I be looking for. Can I go work in private practice (say hospital-owned group, partnership track) or will I be ineligible then?

Thanks!

No one has successfully done it because the first people eligible to do it will hit their 10 year mark in 2017.

Starting this summer I will be working in an outpatient primary care office that is part of a 501(c)(3) organization, so it's definitely possible. I'm hopeful that PSLF is still a thing 6 years from now (I did a chief year, so I only have 6 years left before I hopefully qualify). Where I will be working is part of a larger multispecialty group with offices all around the region - I imagine those types of groups have an easier time filing the paperwork to become a 501(c)(3) than a small independent physician-owned practice might be. So look for jobs with a similar model to a place like Kaiser or Partners Healthcare, or consider joining an academic practice where you are employed by a 501(c)(3) hospital/medical school

Thank you, this is helpful. When you were interviewing for your job, did you ask them if they were part of a 501(c)(3) organization? How do you find out if they are? I can't imagine that all pediatrics outpatient offices are 501(c)(3) organizations...right? If they are private practice? I think many hospitals are....although they have to be non-profit. I believe that for-profit hospital chains such as Tenet, HealthSouth, and HCA (Hospital Corporation of America), as well as any clinic/peds office affiliated with them would not qualify for PSLF....Would it be ok to ask in an interview if the office was 501(c)(3) or does that come off weird?
