I just want to know what are the difference, a phD program with APA approval and programs without... i have been looking thorughout this forum and found no answer.

i hope someone can help me

Thank you

does anyone know if there are any difference btw a phd program with APA approval and ones that are not approved by APA?

hope someone can help me here

Thank you
There are a number of key differences....with the non-APA program being at a disadvantage across the board.

-Possible limitation for jobs (more applicable to clinically-based ones, though sometimes in other places). The VA, many/most academic hospitals, and other highly competitive jobs.

-Possible trouble being license (more applicable if you want to practice). Most states have a process where you can supply additional information and be licensed, though at least 3 states won't allow licensure from non-APA programs.

-Less competitive for internship. You need an internship to be granted a degree in most clinical programs, so this is an important step in the process.

-Bias from other professionals. Day to day it wouldn't matter, but competing for jobs and the like may be harder.

While you await better, longer answers to this question, my response is as follows:

Most internship sites (and you will do an internship at the end of your PhD) require or prefer that you come from an APA-accredited program. APA accreditation gives a national "legitimacy" of sorts to doctoral psych programs. I've seen the legitimacy of APA accreditation debated on this board, but the short story is that attending a program without it will make your life harder later on. Do yourself a favor and avoid programs that are not APA accredited (yes, this includes Harvard).

I just noticed that you posted this twice, here and in

Please don't double post. Many of us read both threads, and it's considered a bit rude.

Just like some online colleges(their credits won't transfer to accredited universities because they do meet certain standards and criteria) A PHD school without accreditation does not meet certain standards and criteria. It is a favorable membership(APA membership) to add to your CV as well. I can only speak for me...but if you want a position in Academia or research it is more important to go with an APA PHD school. It really depends on what you want to do with the PHD degree ..where you wanna work. I err on the side of caution because I want a large amount of options and places to work. Hope this helps...😎

*MOD NOTE: Thank you for the heads up. I deleted the other thread and moved the user posts over into this one. -t4c*

Rainedallnight, thanks! I retract my anti-Harvard statement 😉
