Hello everyone,

I hope that you can help me.

I'm just a pre-med now but I'm interested in psych, yet the people I talk to about it advice against it---low pay, low respect? Is this true? Is this something you guys regret doing? If it helps, I'm from the New Orleans area.

I'd check the prior posts, as this comes up a lot.

The short of it:

No regrets about doing it, and don't know any psychiatrists who regret their choice, but do know people in other specialties that regret theirs.

Some lack of respect, but only from certain groups and no less than any other specialty (they all have stigmas/stereotypes - like surgeons are superficial jocks)

Pay is definitely not low. They're misinformed if they tell you it is.

Pay being low? 🙄 Well, I suppose this depends on what you consider a low salary. If your parents were/are CEO's of a Fortune 500 Co, for example, and you consider making on average $175K per year for working generally 8 to 5 to be low, then I suppose you need to look to a different speciality or profession. I come from a middle class family were my parents combinded income came to ~100K per year, so I consider the pay to be far more then enough.
