hello everyone..i've been a voyeur for some time now and decided to post.
I am confused as to which direction to take..either psych or surgery. i have a very inquisitive and probing mind so i know i'd excel at both. That being said, i have major depression and am on zoloft for it. my psy thinks i have bpd. But i have kinda known this for a while. i figured it out when i first saw that movie "girl interrupted" and related a little too much to the main character. I then researched the disorder in detail and FINALLY found something that explained my supersensitivity and high emotionality. It is like a curse and a gift. I am highly intelligent (i would like to think) and artistic..(write poetry, play trumpet, piano, draw) so my question is: Would this inhibit me from going into psych?

Nobody on this board obviously know you. But base on what you have written, I think you might be better of pursuing surg. If you have bpd, the last thing you want to become is a psychiatrist. I've met plenty of decent surg types with possible bpd.

The main concern I would have with the idea of a psychiatrist with bpd is professional boundaries. I think someone with borderline tendencies would have to be extra mindful of where boundaries are and extra careful not to cross them. Everyone has to be mindful of this, so it's not like I am singling anyone out, but I think it might be more easy for someone with bpd to unconsciously slip up in that area if not making a conscious continuing decision and habit not to.

I agree. Regulating ones emotion and maintaining a healthy boundary are extremely challenging in mental health. Along with other complicated clinical issues. For someone with high emotional reactivity, it can be disastrous for both the patients and physicians.
Surg people don't have to worry much about emotion. Just cut and stitch.
