I wrote a scutwork.com review of RWJ-Camden, its my home school but Whopper is a resident there, may have invaluable info - good luck!

I can tell you these things...

-UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (Camden) Program, Camden, New Jersey ??

This is my program. ITs divided into 1/3 of the residents stationed 4 out of 5 days in Atlantic Regional Medical Center.
I'm only mentioning ARMC here.
Pros:
Has an involuntary & a voluntary unit STCF (about a 30 bed unit)
Has a psyche ER crisis evaluation center.
Services all of Atlantic county-you will see a good mix of several disorders both rural & urban.
Also has a PACT team, outpatient, acute partial program, & several other things many programs don't have.
*Excellent call schedule. Typical days are 8-3 (once you get the hang of it). Call is 5-10pm, and you get to go home at night though you will get beeped throughout the night (still much better than an on-site call).
-Cafeteria has good FREE food.
-Atlantic County is a decent place to live & close to several resort towns & cities.

Cons--ARMC is a community hospital--and as such, some of the attendings are not board certified (they're behind on their data). Some of the attendings are out to use residents for scutwork (though you'll always end the day early once you've figured out the routine). However none of the attendings are mean or pimp.
-very little research. You can do research but you have to do it on your own & do case reports.

Overall-very good clinical overall experience, overall good work schedule that allows you to get a decent night's sleep on most call days, good room for extra cash-they have moonlighting & restraint duty pay--hardly any work for $420 a week, once every 5 weeks. However its sometimes annoying dealing with a lazy attending who's trying to use you to do his/her work.

The Camden end:
Pros: all the attendings are university approved attendings--all board certified and up to date on scholarly stuff--e.g. almost all of them have fellowship training, several from noteworthy institutions. Several of them are rated NJ's Top Docs. YOU WILL GET GREAT TEACHING!
-The general culture of the program (both ends: Camden & ARMC) are laid back-no one pimps.
-Part of a university hospital system where you will be working in a place with several residency programs.
-Has good research going on
-excellent training on Consult/Liason & outpatient
-If you want to get into Child psyche-our program director just completed fellowship from Johns Hopkins and is very up to date on that area & has good connections with several noteworthy child psychiatrists.
-You will work with & teach UMDNJ RWJ medstudents.

Cons: Cafeteria has bad & expensive food
inpatient unit only hosts 6 beds--all voluntary.
Call is tough--you'll pretty much get no sleep.
Since it services Camden--a very very poor city--lots of malingerers & substance abusers. While these people are very important to treat, expect A LOT of these types a lot more than people with other disorders you'd rather see (e.g. schizophrenia). Cases are pretty much all urban--little rural.
-Camden is not a nice place to live (though you can commute from a nearby town-several of which are safe).

-UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine Program, Cherry Hill, New Jersey ??
Don't know much about this program other than that it is very new.

-UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School Program, Newark, New Jersey ??
In Newark--has a lot of the same pros & cons as the Camden program. Newark is a drug/low SES battlezone.
One pro is its close to NYC which gives some oppurtunities to do some electives in NYC--which is a psychiatric mecca.

-Bergen Regional Medical Center Program, Paramus, New Jersey ??
I interviewed here and got a good impression but don't know much more. Their program secretary was very sweet.

-UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Program, Piscataway, New Jersey ??
This program tends to attract the most applicants--at least that's what I'm hearing and tends to be seen as the center of the UMDNJ residencies out of the entire state. It is also seen as somewhat more competitive. I don't know much more about the program.

However I went to college in the area-and its a great place to be for someone in their mid-late 20s or even early 30s. Since there's a local college & medschool, there's lots of young people to date, restaurants & other college culture things which may appeal to the younger residency crowd. Its also a decent place to live unlike Newark or Camden.

There is an addiction fellowship attached to this program.'

Overall I can tell you that I am happy at my own program, but yes its not perfect (no program is). As you can probably see--I'm telling it like it is, I'm not going to whitewash it. If any of you have any questions about my own program feel free to contact me via PM. However please no stupid questions (I've gotten plenty--e.g. some guys call and ask me about programs in Colorado--like I was ever at one).

Any idea how this program compares to other competitive east coast programs?

-Bergen Regional Medical Center Program, Paramus, New Jersey ??

Ouch, I talked to some residents from this program from the 2007 IPS which was in New Orleans--just ended 2 days ago. They weren't too happy with their program. I however don't want to go into it because its 2nd hand data and I don't know much about the program.

Any idea how this program compares to other competitive east coast programs?
Overall I'd say-above average. Again, I'm not there and I'm basing this on from what I hear. Its not the best program, but it is considered the most competitive in NJ (at least from what I'm hearing). NYC is only about 1 hr away and does have some top notch institutions such as Columbia.

I wouldn't put UMDNJ-Piscataway with Columbia, MGH or a "top" program in terms of pure academic reputation, but it is a respected university program with several good oppurtunities-clinical & research.

I did my pscyh rotation for third year at Trinitas in Elizabeth, which, is the base for the seton hall program. I can't really comment, because this was my only exposure to psych. Its a brand new program, four residents a year, the cafeteria really isn't good. There are alot of inpatients, and outpatient therapy is done across the street from the hospital, no ECT onsite. The place is very laid back, residents sometimes sit and talk with each other for an hour or two in the morning because after they are done seeing a few patients it seems there is nothing else for them to do. Again, I don't know how they work rotating the emergency pscyh, inpatient, etc... so that may have just been slow for one month.

The attendings are all approachable and willing to teach. Residents have good morale and are happy, although it is somewhat rough right now with setting up their medicine months first year since they don't have many established affiliations to send the residents out to currently. Wish I could comment more

I am currently a resident at the new Seton Hall Program. The entire residency is based at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, NJ except for 2 months in Neurology which is based at JFK Hospital in Edison, NJ which which has it's own Neurology Residency Program (also sponsored through Seton Hall University).

The Hospital has 42 adult inpatient beds and 42 child/adolescent inpatient beds. It also has a 15 bed unit for individuals diagnosed with both developmental disabilities and psychiatric disorders. We also have a stand-alone psychiatric ER which is staffed by a psychiatrist 24/7.

Our program director is awesome and dedicated to making our program the best in NJ.
