Hi everyone!

I'm new to this board but have been reading the threads for quite some time and have found them to be very helpful and informative...I'm currently a 4th year psych resident in Manhattan and am just starting my job search for next year (and I'm hoping that I'm not too late!) but I'm having a devil of a time trying to figure out the job market in NYC...Ideally, I'd like to find an outpatient or ER position (or some mix of the two) but I'm not sure how to go about finding these? I've been contacted by a few headhunters but most of the jobs they offer are in upstate New York or NJ...if anyone has any experience job-hunting in Manhattan, any insights or suggestions you could share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Waldenpond.. I wonder how much those headhunters offer you?? Whats an estimate starting salary right out of residency I wonder?

Hasn't anyone seen "What about Bob?" The psychiatrist in that film had a really nice 44th floor office in the middle of midtown and was also able to schedule a month long vacation to his lake house at lake Winnipesaukee. Based upon this irrefutable evidence, the job market in Manhattan must be pretty good.

Sorry I don't have anything actually helpful to add.

I had a discussion about this with my PD a week ago. He suggested that a good way to find Manhattan jobs is actually word-of-mouth, and proceded to give me examples of jobs that he knows that are available, but aren't advertised within the NY Times for any extended period due to cost.

The options are these:

1. Cold-call hospitals and clinics. Many or most have positions that are unadvertised.

2. Check the NY Times jobs section or the Psychiatry News paper.

3. Use a headhunter specializing in Locum Tenens (particularly good for Manhattan)

The salary for starting attendings will vary depending where you go, obviously, with more prestigious and more faculty and teaching positions offering less money on occassion. Places like this would include Sloan or Columbia, and may vary between 110k - 125k.

Less "prestigious" and more clinically oriented positions in Manhattan can offer around 200k including benfits and signing bonuses.

Yes, it's low here in the city, which is yet another reason I'm leaving when I'm done. 🙂

Two different timetables.

Fellowships are now.

Jobs are a different story. Nobody knows what jobs are going to be available in July '08 and generally won't know until people give notice, which is usually a couple of months before they want to quit. They sometimes know earlier, and sometimes there are unfilled jobs, but they generally won't be able to guarantee anything until the spring.

Best to send your cv around to all the places you'd consider (address to clinical director is probably sufficient, though if you want a specific type of job--like cl or er--then send to the head of that section). Meet with your own PD for suggestions since there might be unofficial conduits between your place and some other place. If you see something (or hear about something) tactfully keep your name on their radar screen, since your motivation to get a job is matched by their motivation to keep their jobs filled.

thanks guys! i really appreciate all the suggestions! ...i'll start mailing my CV out to various places in the city...hmmm, besides the academic institutions, is there a list of psych clinics in manhattan? from what i gather, it seems like most psychiatrists in manhattan have solo practices (which would be pretty hard to do straight out of residency)...does anyone know of group practices that might be looking to hire?

I don't know of any group psychiatry practices in NYC, but lots of people have provate practices and part time jobs. The jobs can be all over the place (besides the academic places, I've recently heard of jobs with visiting nurse services, homeless outreach, the fire department, every college's student health serviec, as well as more traditional psych clinics).
