I need some reassurance...I had my CAF/CV in mid september and then LORs started rolling in around end of sept-early oct but I did not hand in my Perosnal Statement until Oct 17th...only have one interview...what is people's experience with NY programs?

Did I put myself at a great disadvantage by not handing in personal statement earlier or do some programs wait until MSPE comes in?

Basically getting nervous but should I be?

Hate to say it, but yes, you are at the back of the pack. I applied the second week in September. I had all of my interview invites by the first week in October. I haven't heard from any other programs since October 7. I highly doubt that I will hear from any other programs unless people start dropping from some of the less competitive interviews. In any case, from what I have heard, not many programs (but some) do not wait for the MSPE (Nov. 1). One positive aspect to your application is that you are an MD applicant ( osteopathic here).

Were most of your early interviews for NYC programs?
Damn me and my procrastination...hopefully it will work out like it always has up until now...thanks for your honesty...more opinions needed...
anyone apply late too?

Most programs will not look at an application until the personal statement is submitted.

It depends on the strength of your application. I doubt that most programs have completely filled their slots. If your application is stronger than the ones currently in their possession, then you should get an interview. To improve your chances make sure all your information has been submitted.

I applied to NYU just after they had sent out their first round of interviews. Haven't heard from them one way or the other.

Columbia isn't mentioned on our list of interview invites. Either that means they wait on MSPE or it means that no one from this forum was invited. Or they don't want to tell anyone that they were

Columbia and MGH seem to be engaging in their annual contest to see who can send out interviews last but still fill all their interview slots. It's the little things... 😉

LOL. Given the strength and reputation of both programs, I bet they could send out invites in January and still pull that off. I am starting to get the little lower eyelid twitch about this whole thing.

Columbia had already invited by this time last year (10/12).

Looks like Columbia is taking the prize this year. Just saw that someone added MGH/McLean to the list.

The real question is whether this contest is more like the coaches' poll where the amount of difference between the two matters or more like the computer rankings where win/lose is a categorical variable.

I had all my stuff turned in a week or so after you could send in the application. I've heard from pretty much all of the programs fairly quickly except for the NYC programs. I've only heard from 3 programs in NYC, but I've applied to all the big name programs (Colombia, Cornell) and some of the lesser known programs too. I'll give them a call and see what up, but at this point I'm just going to assume that silence = no interview.

At this point, I have less than 10 interviews and 2 are in NYC. The other 10 or so places I applied to are all NYC programs that I haven't heard from.

Maybe some of the NYC programs are slower to offer interviews? It seems like you were right on time. What do you say to the programs when you call them?

When I applied to med school, I've applied to some programs where you pretty much had to call before they would offer you an interview. I assume they had already processed the interview and only wanted to schedule people who really wanted to go. You had to call them and they would say it would take a few weeks to process the interview. Then in day or two they would offer you an interview.

You just ask them if they are still processing your application. Then they can usually tell you if they have received it or if they are still going over your application. It's a round about way of saying "I am interested in the program and this isn't a BS back up choice."

I have definitely heard of this phenomenon before. And it worked for me in graduate school. But somehow I doubt too many people apply to Columbia as a BS backup choice.

Given the broad sampling of SDN posters, and the quality of interviews they've listed - I'd say there's a good chance that Columbia hasn't offered interviews yet. We only just listed our first MGH hit on Friday, and I was only partially joking when I said that these two programs seem to engage in a game of chicken with how late they offer every year. An artificial but effective way of making applicants "want it more." Of course, if you know someone else applying who has an interview but doesn't post here, this theory goes down the tubes.

Protecting anonymity of the people I proxy for as much as possible, of the 'top tier' places I've listed, I am not always the one who received the invite, and when I was, there were usually one or two PMs in my box from other individuals who'd received invites.

So I would be fairly surprised if Columbia has sent out invites. Any. Freaking. Day. Now.

They are one of the last programs I am waiting on hearing from.

Is it considered ok to email a program I am very interested in that I haven't heard from about an interview? Just to let them know I'd be very interested in visiting and learning more about their program? Or is that super bad manners? Does it matter if I contact them by email vs. telephone?

Thanks!

Good morning -- I think it is in your interest to contact a program if you do not hear from them. The worst they can say is no, the best they can say is yes, and in doing so you'll distinguish yourself as an especially interested applicant. Good luck to you!

Gosh darn it, that just makes you SOOO proud to be at that great institution of ours...

Learn premeds, learn. This is precisely why it's worth paying $40K a year more than your state school.
