...was a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. (And to my knowledge, never made any effort to obtain prescribing privileges... 🙄 )

Cheers (Frasier and Lilith)

uhhh . . .

During Cheers, Dr. Frazier was a psychologist.

Later . . . almost inperceptibly (ie the transition was mostly unnoticed . . .), they made him into a psychiatrist at their convenience.

I know this because I used to watch Cheers and I was interested in the profession. Hence, i paid special attention to Frasier's profession.

cheerios.

Not that we ever saw him write a prescription or admit a psychotic patient... :meanie:

Of course not, he was an analyst. Actually pretty fitting given the purported location of Cheers (Boston Common) and the highest density of analyst's offices (Back Bay).

Actually, the story of Frasier Crane is quite interesting, and represents the issues of the general public often not undertanding the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist...

In the early Frasier Crane episodes of Cheers, he was portrayed as a psychologist. And there was at least one episode during which he refers to his dead father, who was also a psychologist.

But somewhere along the line, Frasier turned into a psychiatrist with a living father who was an ex-policeman! 🙄

Yes - I have watched a lot of Cheers in my day!

ETA: Oops, I must have missed peiyung's post! Sorry for the redundant info.

....

Obviously an issue of transference vis a vis his former analyst!

if anyone ever watched Animaniacs...Dr. Scratchnsniff was a psychiatrist. he pulled out his own hair bcz the warner bros <and the warner sister> stressed him out! 🙂

The Simpsons!

Dr. Marvin Monroe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dr. Marvin MonroeDr. Marvin Monroe was a recurring character from the series The Simpsons.

He is a goofy, strangled-voiced local psychiatrist, once Mr. Burns' therapist. Monroe also promoted series of subliminal weight-loss audio cassettes. He was thought to have died between the sixth and seventh seasons, and the Springfield hospital has been named in his honor. His grave could also be seen in the graveyard in the episode, "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily." Monroe's disappearance is an example of Chuck Cunningham syndrome.

The Tattoo Guy from Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire is called Mervin Monroe, and is Dr Marvin Monroe's younger brother, according to a Simpsons Trading Card. However, it has been argued whether the set is canon or not.

There was a plot conceived for Marvin in the early years. Marvin's real name was actually Marilyn (making him Marilyn Monroe), and due to constant teasing he changed his name and became a psychiatrist. This plot was confirmed by Matt Groening, but was never actually used.

Marvin Monroe appeared in The Simpsons Comics #112 (a Halloween special) getting murdered in a secret torture house under Moe's Bar.

Monroe was voiced by Harry Shearer, who reportedly wanted Dr. Monroe removed from the show because doing the character's voice hurt his throat. After a ten-year hiatus, Dr. Marvin Monroe made a brief appearance in the season 15 episode "Diatribe of a Mad Housewife", claiming to have been "very sick" (which could be a parody of why Harry Shearer wanted Monroe removed from the show).

Well, on Crossing Jordan, that annoying blond chick is both a police detective and a psychologist, so it's possible to be both. Doesn't explain the dead though...

Has anyone seen the new Grey's Anatomy spinoff Private Practice? The psychiatrist is really lame. Stereotypical crazy psychiatrist. Whenever she opens her mouth I cringe.

I'll keep watching though. Because Tim Daly is hot 🙂

Heather Graham is HOTTER. 😍

Tobias was an Analrapist. (Analyst/therapist). Hilarious show. I take it not too many people watched it in its entirety since nobody pointed out the mistake. Him being an analrapist was a funny point in one episode that sticks with me at least. I highly recommend this show. It's only on DVD now, so you have to go out and get it that way. You wont be sorry though!

But there's no mistake ... he was an analyst/therapist but with a psychiatry background. He's an M.D.

BTW, one of my favorite moments is when he gets business cards made up with "analrapist" on them ...

If I recall, didn't he do his Analrapist residency at Mass General? 😀

I missed that he was a psychiatrist. I guess I just figured he wasn't. That guy was hilarious.

Sometimes the Squigglevision made my head hurt a little bit to watch several episodes at once, but I thought it was a very gentle, fun, unique show. It also had some sweet moments that could pull at your heartstrings without going overboard, like those showing the relationship between Dr Katz his lovable slacker son Ben. 😍

Also, this is my first post to the SDN, it's nice to meet you all; happy to be here - Good luck to all in the 2008 match.

I though Dr. Katz was a great show.

I still remember one of my favorite lines that I still laugh over:
(paraphrased)

Dr. Katz: Ben, the phone for you. It's David.
Ben: Who?
Dr. Katz: David, from high school.
Ben: David's still in high school?

The new Grey's Anatomy spin-off on TV, called "Private Practice" has a psychiatrist I believe, though I've yet to watch it.

And of course, the landmark film about the psychiatric relationship--Ordinary People with Judd Hersch...still watchable and cool!

Dr. Kroger from Monk. I think he's a pretty accurate depiction. And his office is kickass.

Yeah....But from what I rememeber (only seen the show twice) he never did behavioral therapy with the guy. Seemed like bad form to me 🙄

I loved Dr. Katz. Comedy Central used to be so much better. 🙁

Another Dr. Katz fan!

When he asked Conan O'Brien (who guest-voiced in an episode) about why he was unhappy with his appearance, Conan's response was, paraphrasing from remote memory, "Look at how pale and lanky I am ... it's like I was genetically engineered to live in a bog." 🙂
