Hi everyone,

I have Widener's PsyD program in my top 10-12 schools to apply to, but one of the aspects of this University that I really like is that they have a joint PsyD/MBA program that can be completed in 5 years. The PsyD program, which has its own APA accredited intership at Widener, takes 5 years to complete alone. Through the addition of summer courses, the MBA can also be earned in that same 5 year time period. I see this as a huge advantage because of my interests to do psychological and business consulting in addition to my private clinical practice in the future. My question is: Will my doctorate be enough to be hired/contracted to do most business consultation jobs? Or will I be much more marketable and be worth more money if I have an MBA in addition to the PsyD?

Any thoughts? Anyone do consultation work that could share some expertise?

Thanks

- Kevin

i am in NO way an expert....but what ive heard from faculty is that having the MBA really does make you more marketable....

i gotta tell ya, that dual degree is TOUGH! it has the most extra classes out of all the dual programs (i think its around 13 or 15) and you can pretty much kiss your summers goodbye! i have a few classmates doing it....theres actually two. one is the straight MBA, and the other has a focus on like mental health administration (or something to that effect) i think you want the straight MBA.....

if you have a chance to contact a professor to speak about this...i would suggest Dr. Marcyzk (pronounced Marzack) because he is in charge of the I/O track and he worked/works as a consultant.....plus, he'll give it to ya straight!

What business consultations you are looking to do? Can you give any examples (of even specific tasks/issues you'd like to deal with)?

The only things I can imagine MBA/ PsyD is useful is
- I/O type work (including I/O consulting , but than why Clinical and not I/O)
- Mental health administration

I am desperately looking how one can profit from having that combination, mostly because I have the M 3 letters and looking to get the P... so it is very encouraging to see it makes you more marketable ... except I really do not understand how.

What I am interested in doing is business consulting in the realms of employee selection for corporations, executive coaching, etc.

As for what you mentioned about why I am focusing on clinical and not I/O; My heart and my interests primarily are in clinical psychology. However, I am also interested in diversifying HOW I apply my knowledge of human behavior/psychology by extending my services to other fields. This way I can help others through my clinical practice, but also help to prevent burnout by adding variation to my job as well. This is where the consulting comes into play for me. It would add another source of income as well as allow me to apply my skills in a unique way to help businesses operate the best that they can.

Thanks for your reply and feedback

Thanks,
Just a word of warning - a lot of things you will be learning in business school
are irrelevant to what you want to do, because they are tools used in business. It might be better even just working for a corporation and observing what is going on.
Business education is extremely commoditized and unless you are in one of top 25 schools it can not serve as a good signaling.
