Hey everyone,

I am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get into a PsyD program in the US or Canada without an honours degree? I turned down an opportunity to complete my honours during my undergrad in psych, and I am regretting it now... I am trying to explore my options for PsyD programs because I don't know if I will be satisfied with a masters in counselling psychology (which was my original plan)

Any help or information would be great! Thank you

Hi

I am in a PsyD program currently and did not complete the honors program at my undergrad university. As long as you have above a 3.3 GPA (US), above 1000 (old) GRE, decent research experience, and some clinical experience, you should be ok. Hope this helps.

Do you mind if I ask where you are doing your PsyD?
I'm done my undergrad, where would be a good place to get research or clinical experience?

Thanks for the reply 🙂

I graduated from a university that didn't even offer an "honors" degree, so yes, it is possible to be accepted into a graduate program without one.

Hell, I hadn't even heard of honors degrees until I relocated out-of-state. There were honors courses for a select few classes at the universities I attended--no honors degrees, programs, theses, etc.

Trying sending the person a private message for the PsyD information. They maybe very well be willing to share that with you but not that whole forum 😉

Re: research experience. Look at the psych dept websites for universities in your area. Find a prof doing research that sounds appealing to you and email them. There are other approaches as well that you might be able to find by doing a search in the forum. This is just the one I'm familiar with.

Good advice here. Also don't limit yourself to universities if you have a medical school or research hospital in the area. Oftentimes, there are folks doing psych-related research that may interest you there. 👍
