I am thinking about applying to Chestnut Hill College's PsyD and La Salle University's PsyD. Can anyone give me any information as to how well these programs are. Also I'd like to know what contributes to the difference in internship match rates between Chesnut Hill College and La Salle University. Chesnut Hill has a lower internship match rate, especially for APA-approved internship, while La Salle is above the national average of APA-approved internship match rates.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I cannot speak for Chestnut Hill, however; I completed my Master's internship at a highly sought after internship placement for Clinical PhD/PsyD interns and actually worked with an intern from La Salle. He was extremely good and well-liked by the faculty. If I'm not mistaken, he did the Health Psych concentration at La Salle. He also spoke highly of the program. I know this is not much help, but this is one person that was obviously successful in La Salle's program. Best of luck to you!

I completed my masters at Chestnut Hill and interviewed there for their PsyD program. My impression: very unorganized, professors are not very friendly or committed to program, not at all professional (during my master's program or interview process)...just my 2 cents. Most of my experience comes from their masters program so keep that in mind. Not sure about match rates. I know Chestnut Hill said they were developing a captive internship for incoming class...not sure if all slots were APA approved.

I dont know much about Chestnut Hill, and have never had any interaction with any of their students while on practica. As for Lasalle, I've heard mixed impressions. I was on two different practicums with 3 of LaSalle's students. Two of the students found the program to be a good fit, but lacking some components as it is very CBT. While on placement one student quit the program and ended up transferring due to significant changes in the program with regard to faculty. Neither have a captive internship.

Have you looked at Immaculata, Widener, or PCOM?

I attended Chestnut Hill College's Psyd program and I absolutely loved it. The experiences mentioned above I've heard before when it pertains to the masters program, as this is a separate program. The PsyD program, however, is pretty well organized and I really value the education that I received there. I'd be happy to answer more specific questions if you have any.

As for the match rate, I can say that CHC is taking steps to address this issue. I, and several members of my cohort, matched at APA internships. When looking at the match rate, keep in mind that the program was APA accredited in 2005, so that may impact earlier rates. I know two years ago the match rate was above the national average. However, there are people in each cohort that don't. They work hard with you to review your essays and have a mock interview process.

Also, if I may just add something else about choosing between the two schools, the largest difference is in theoretical orientation. CHC is psychodynamic and family systems, while LaSalle has a CBT/ACT orientation I believe. I have worked with several LaSalle students, and all have been strong clinicians, but we've had differences in our conceptualizations of cases. Rathering than looking at the match rates (in this instance), it may be more helpful to consider what theoretical orientation fits you best.

Hi,

I am currently in La Salle's Psy.D program and it is great! There are so many opportunities for clinical work including various practicum sites in the Philadelphia area, as well as a training clinic on La Salle's campus that is run by the PsyD students and faculty. The practica and the training clinic help prepare you for internship in that you get a variety of different experiences, many clinical hours, and a great deal of supervision. And yes, there is a good match rate for APA-accredited internships. I believe La Salle's Psy.D website has more details on that. Hope this helped!
