got an 85 on part 1----can you specialize---if so which specialities
also thinkin about a gpr
does the board score make a diff in picking a gpr? 85=good gpr?
do speciality programs like when candidates do a gpr first

im thinkin of going into a speciality dunno which one i know OS is tough 90+
thinkin about the other ones i kinda wanna specialize but dont know which one got a few ideas but nothin concrete just lookin for adivice

but i want to gain experience from a gpr

Check around the forum here. From what others seem to say, 90 or above is what you want if you are into OMFS, ortho, and pedo. I think for endo straight out of school, people seem to say you need well over a 90.

how can somebody say i know i want to specialize just not sure what specialty i like? one should specialize because they love one facet of dentistry, not just to specialize. weird.

I kind of agree, but some people just like the idea of being a master of one trade instead of a jack of all trades--I can understand that.

According to the new data, if you took this yrs exam, an 82 is the national average, so an 85 is well above that, the percentiles haven't come out yet and won't until sometime early next yr. I think that in the past about 20% of test takers got a 90+, now it is somewhere around 10% or less it is looking like.

Last yr the average part 1 was 86, in yrs past it has been generally 85.

So a 90 may not be needed with the new format, we will wait and see.

Your Part I score is just one facet of the application that they'll look at. How's your ranking, GPA, can you obtain fantastic LoRs, extracurriculars, any research, etc.?

A score of 85 can be within the realm of possiblity (maybe not for OS, ortho, endo --> they just tend to be really picky about that) provided that the other aspects of you app makes you look like a rock star in your desired specialty.

I think having a decent score makes it easier for someone to get into a "good" GPR but a lot of it will be based on personality and which person a director will like. Also it'll depend on what you consider is "good" do you want to take a lot of call/trauma/emergency? An AEGD vs GPR, programs seeing 3-4 pts a day vs 10-12, etc.

thanks,
i'm thinkin about OS, it what i'm interested in. I heard that if you do a GPR its a good way to jump into OS--Also I'd like the experience from a GPR, call trauma and whatnot, and hopefully be an OS at a hospital one day.
I know an 85 is a limited score for OS, my gpa is average around a 3.4-3.5. all this being said--any options?

I think you'd be limiting your chances of getting into an OS program with that score. Look at the threads in the residency section about OS and they really emphasize getting past that sacred 90 line if you want a good shot at getting into a program.

If you are attempting a GPR for the hospital/call/trauma aspects then it already sounds like your very interested in OS. Why waste a year doing general dentistry if you want to extract teeth all day, isn't 4-6 years of OS training long enough?

Personally I would study like crazy, get yourself past that 90 mark, involve yourself in all things OS, get recs and face time with OS faculty, apply to as many places as you can afford and pray to the gods. You can always post-match into a GPR if things don't work out on the first attempt. Yes, doing a GPR can be helpful but they will still want a strong candidate who has strong numbers.
