For those who are running their own practice would you be willing to share what your Paid Time Off policy is for your employees. I'm trying to come up with one that's fair and reasonable. Also, what holidays do you pay your employees for?
 
When I had my own office, I gave 2 weeks per year, eligible after 6 months of employement.

I gave paid time off for the "Big 6" - New Year's day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Xmas.

In my current office (large clinic) they get about 2 weeks per year PTO, but it's based on hours worked- each hour worked give a % of a PTO hour. So I believe it's something like 100 hours worked = 8 hours PTO. They also get the Big 6, but they have to work the work day before and the work day after to get the pay. So anyone who doesn't come to work this Tuesday won't get paid for Labor Day.

I round all hours up to 80 per week, give 5 days PTO, and give all holidays (MLK, good friday, memorial, july 4th, labor, 2.5 pays at thanksgiving, xmas and xmas eve, newyear's and new year eve).
 
I allow two weeks vacation (10 days) and 4 sick days, for 14 total days off per year. Its 112 total hours per year. I'm overly generous though.
 
2 weeks PTO based on accrual. 5 sick days which can roll over. 8 pd holidays. Overall too generous but I get and keep the best.
23 total days per year.

Do those of you who offer what you consider to be overly-generous benefits, including PTO, find that that retains good employees?

I found that salary helped, benefits helped, but what really retained employees was job satisfaction. Having a boss (me, you) who treats them well personally and professionally goes a very long way toward making up for the benefits they could get at other jobs.

What I never understood was the doctors who were total @$$wipes to their employees, paid them crappy and gave minimal benefits, but still always had office staff.
