Most of the time when people talk about their publications for medical school application, they are talking about having their lab research published in a journal.
My lab research will not be finished by the time I apply to medical school. However, there is an opportunity at my school for students to have research articles published in a biological/health journal.
Will it look good to have an article like that published or does the publication really need to be from lab research to look impressive?

Any reviewed approval of your work is impressive. Publishing of any sort is definitely a plus. That said, without understanding exactly what you are talking about, I can only assume that the rigor is not the same as publishing a research study in a peer reviewed journal. So your alternative publication, while certainly worthy of mention on your application, doesn't have the same umph of more traditional science publications.
