My father is the head OB/GYN for a very respectable private practice hospital and has offered me the opportunity to publish a paper with him. The case is very unique and I have been assured it would be a bigger deal than just getting my name on a normal case study. My question is this, would ADCOMS look at it unfavorably since it's my father and not a position that I earned based on merit? He is a UTSW graduate himself and I wouldn't want to hurt my chances of being accepted there (my dream school) or any of the other Texas schools that might know him. Thanks in advance!

I would definitely do it if it you are going to get to be closely involved in the process and learn something about writing up and publishing case studies. In the real world, using your connections to pursue cool opportunities is very normal and even encouraged. It would be one thing if your dad was just putting your name on his study so you could get published, but it's perfectly okay for you to be involved in his research and then get your name on a publication for real work that you did. Just be clear on your application that you did this with your father, and explain the work that YOU did and what YOU learned from the experience.

What is your role in the paper? What will you be doing besides adding your name to the list of authors?
