I have an unusual situation and wondering if anybody has some advice or a similar experience.

Recently out of curiosity ran an experiment online, completely on my own (I am pre-graduate school), that had some really interesting results. To make a long story short: I wrote up a paper, showed it around, got some great feedback, and would like to submit it for publication to a small specialized journal whose editor was very encouraging.

Is this possible?? Will a journal accept research unaffiliated with any institution?

If the editor has already told you he is interested, then go ahead. Your institution would just be the undergrad institution you attend. Unless you received editing or other help from a faculty member or adviser, I suppose you would be the sole author.

Did you get ethical approval for the data collection?

I had no access to an IRB board so was unable to get "official" approval 🙁

However, I informally discussed ethical issues with a number of experienced researchers before beginning, and complied completely with institutional guidelines.

Someting tells me that if you were to publish this under your undergraduate institution's name and the study wasn't approved by the IRB at that institution, you may be in for trouble later down the line.

Thats a good point.

I agree with this. There are some universities who will even go as far as to disallow one to publish something under their institution's name if you did not receive IRB approval through them. I would think twice before going this route.

Yeah. I have no plans of mentioning my undergrad university nor my current RA employer. That would be a VERY bad idea 🙂

Definitely don't list your undergrad if you didn't go through their IRB (at least not without checking with the department and IRB first). Could create enormous problems. I'm not even sure if a professor could be a co-author without getting in trouble if it didn't go through the IRB.

Actually some journals don't allow you to publish there either unless you have gone through some sort of ethics review, but if the editor has said its okay you are probably fine on that front.
