I just submitted my AEDA application yesterday. I have no prereqs and plan to aggressively get them through winter/spring and summer. I'm a junior at NYU (technology degree)
I banked shadowing hours and got one LOE from my Ortho. I'm a bit regretful as I may have submitted too early? At 39, I wanted to give myself a shot at Fall 2012 entry. If I can get my pre-reqs and DAT in by the end of the summer next year, do I stand a chance?
Should I be expecting flat-out rejections (Hoping for UMDNJ entry - as I'm in-state) I spoke with the advisor there and she said "If you are taking summer courses we advise you to do very well, B+/A. Your DAT scores should also correlate with your science GPA." I don't think loading up on prereqs will be an issue over the summer (2 six week sessions could feasibly bank 4 science course)
That means I would need to nail Gen Chem 1&2 and Physics 1&2 before summer begins)

lol if you can pull this off than you are a boss. it will be very tough, if not impossible to get into umdnj this cycle if you havent even taken these courses. also umdnj wont even look at ur app unless uve taken the dat. and how will you attend dental school when next year will be your senior year? lol...

Having over 100 credits will suffice in re: to academic reqs.

so have you taken the DAT already? im confused how one can apply w/o any prereqs or the DAT and be considered seriously? sorry if i sound like im mocking you, I see your ambition but just curious if its backed up with knowledge.

With everything good in life, it takes time.

1. You haven't completed any prereqs yet, so you would have no science GPA for them to look at, to see if you can handle science classes.

2. Even for those who completed their prereqs, if you submitted yesterday, you'll have a November mailing date, which is extremely late. You're pretty much last in a long queue. People who submitted in August still haven't received replies from some schools.

3. Have you taking your DAT yet? You need to take your DAT before being considered for admissions. And if you don't have the prereqs, it's gonna be a huge uphill climb to score a respectable DAT score.

Everything considered, it is too late for you to apply this year. You can't just decide to go to dental school, and go. It's extremely competitive and a lot of factors are against you right now. I would say it is IMPOSSIBLE for you to get in this cycle.

Kill those prereqs and good luck for next cycle.

No DAT yet. So if prereqs and DAT are completed by the end of summer 2012 , that's more or less too late ?

Way too late.

Edit- Since you have already applied, you should at least try and make it. Get everything done ASAP. But, even if you do get it done, you wont have much of a shot against people that applied a year in advance of you, at schools that will likely be completely full.

You may be looking at a 2013 application.

You don’t look remotely competitive. If you get in for next year, then as some would say: “You made a deal with the devil."

Yeah you're way too late for this cycle, especially with no DAT at this point. Shoot for 2013.

i dont understand how you can get in for 2012, they dont accept the DAT after November or December of 2011, so the DAT you take next year cannot be considered for the 2012 cycle. I hope you knew that.

I do appreciate your feedback - invaluable. But, please don't assume I woke up this AM and decided to go to D-School.
Due to other degree reqs, I couldn't take prereqs this Fall. Honestly , as insurmountable as it may seem , UMDNJ is OK with prereqs taken over a summer session. That's a bit encouraging. I know my odds are next to nothing. I guess what I should ask is what's the damage done by doing this ?
Does it make it more difficult coming off a reject ?

I didn't know this. Next cycle it is then.

Seems so. Thanks for your input.

good luck man! all the best! sorry to shoot down your 2012 dreams, but I wanted to be honest and let you know how it works. Your best bet is to take Bio, G. Chem and Orgo next year while studying for the DAT. You still have a shot for 2013, but its a bit smaller since you will have to complete a lot of work before then. either way, best of luck!!!!

Thanks much!!!

You need to have everything done by the time you matriculate. Can you even do that for August 2012 (June at some schools)? Like it takes at least a year to do gen chem and gen bio, and then another half/year for organic chem and biochem...and then you still need your DAT..

Even if you had all those done, hypothetically speaking, you are way too late. Your app won't be verified and completed at schools until November. Even if you had a 3.8 and 22AA, I don't think you'd stand much of a chance this late in the game.

Here is the problem with that you did... you have no BCP GPA... how are they going to measure you against someone else? What about DAT?

When next summer roles around... the dental classes will be 99% full... I hope you make it, but in all honestly, I don't see it happening

Sorry for coming off as rude, I just wanted to give you an honest opinion on your chances are for this upcoming cycle. Dental school admissions takes tons of planning and most people will only know where they stand once they take the Bio, Chem and Physics series of courses. Right now, you've taken as many prereqs as a high school senior, 0.

With schools accepting prereqs before enrolling, this occurs when a competitive applicant, who is missing 1-2 prereqs, secured an acceptance at the school, and needs to finish them prior to matriculating. This does not apply to you yet...
